Recognise the power of information

It's inevitable. When you are diagnosed with a life-changing illness, you'll want to gather as much information as possible. Discover more about the disease, and what impact it will have on your life.

As I kept reminding myself, information is power. And you will feel more empowered as you increase your understanding.

I know by learning about MS I felt less vulnerable and exposed in the medical world. At least I could ask doctors constructive questions. Have input into my treatments, and an awareness of what was happening to my body.

However as you become immersed in research I encourage you to…

Acknowledge the impact information can have on your wellbeing – emotionally, mentally, physically.

I definitely underestimated the emotional toll of researching a topic I had a vested interest in. For me, the images of walking sticks and wheelchairs infiltrated my mind and proved difficult to erase. They reinforced my fears, kept me awake at night, and created absolute despondency about my future.

When diagnosed with a life-changing illness I often talk about the importance of staying in the moment. Not imagining every possible catastrophe that may or may not be part of your future.

Staying in the moment is also really important when you are researching information about your disease. Try not to use the scenarios you read about to fill in the unknowns about your own prognosis.

Over the next few weeks I’ll share some more insights into how you can protect your emotional wellbeing when gathering information. As a preview these include:

  • Only focusing on information that is relevant
  • Blocking out negative and ill-informed comments
  • Reminding yourself that you are more than your disease

I look forward to sharing these insights

PS Next time you start a Google search, or read comments on Forums or Facebook Groups, recognise the power of information. Beware of the impact it may have on your wellbeing.
